During the week of Feb. 8-14, Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
During the week of Feb. 8-14, Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and Puna, seven each; Hamakua and South Hilo, one each.
So far this year, there have been 130 DUI arrests compared to 113 during the same period last year, an increase of 15 percent.
There have been 157 major accidents so far this year compared to 170 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.6 percent.
So far this year, there have been two fatal crashes, resulting in two fatalities compared with two fatal crashes, one of which had three deaths, resulting in four fatalities during the same period last year. This represents a decrease of 50 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
